Heat Signature is an actionstealthvideo game developed and published in 2017 by Suspicious Developments, the studio behind 2013's Gunpoint. The player plays as a mercenary who takes on missions around a procedurally generated galaxy in order to liberate space stations. Heat Signature launched for Microsoft Windows on September 21, 2017.

Gameplay[edit]

Heat Signature is an action and stealthvideo game played from a top-down view. Players take control of a member of a group of space mercenaries who embarks on a variety of missions such as hijacking space vessels, stealing technology, assassinating crew members, rescuing captives, and more. Operating from a central base, mercenaries take on missions that require the player to fly the mercenary via a small shuttlecraft to a travelling ship, dock with it, and then infiltrate the ship and return to home base safely. The ultimate goal is to liberate the strongholds of each of the four factions in a randomly-generated nebula. The nebula serves as a tech tree, allowing the player, with each liberation, to unlock various items, such as guns, gadgets, explosives, or pods. Each station within the nebula also includes a defector mission, which are specially developed missions that, in a way, operate as different challenges for the player to attempt; as they offer no monetary gain, these missions are typically completed out of leisure or as a way to practice for standard missions.[2] The layouts of the nebulae, the ships, their crew, and missions are procedurally generated, similar to games of the roguelike genre.[3]

Normally, the game operates in real time. At any time, the player can pause the game, which then provides a menu screen that provides additional options for the player to perform, such as switching weapons, picking up or dropping inventory items, or taking remote control of the shuttle, as well as to plan their next move, such as selecting a target for their attack. This can be done indefinitely, allowing for stunts such as picking up the weapon of a fallen enemy, equipping it, and using it against another target all while in this pause screen. Thus, the game often becomes much more about prediction and somewhat turn-based strategy rather than devising and implementing tactics in real time.

Development and release[edit]

Heat Signature was developed by Suspicious Developments, a team led by former PC Gamer editor Tom Francis. Development took about three years starting around December 2013,[4] and cost around GB£200,000.[5]

The game was released for Microsoft Windows on 21 September 2017.[6] At the time of release, Francis knew that releasing the game was 'biggest risk of [his] life', as the indie game market was saturated with titles.[5] He had hoped to see at least half the sales that he got with Gunpoint. Within the first week, he reported that the sales of Heat Signature had exceeded those of Gunpoint, and that the game was one of the top sellers on Steam during its initial week.[5]

Post-Launch Updates[edit]

After avoiding criticism of Heat Signature for two weeks after release, Tom Francis agreed with many of the caveats in the other-wise positive reviews, saying in a blog post 'almost every critique I read I thought was a fair point.' Three months after launch the Fair Points update was released with fixes to these issues.[7][8]

Heat Signature Igg Games

To celebrate the one year anniversary of Heat Signature's launch the Space Birthday update was released. It is the largest update the game has received, spending five months in development. The update was dedicated to the late John Francis, Tom's father, who died during development.[9] Most notably the Space Birthday update added a daily challenge, and a full list of changes can be found here.

Tom Francis has stated that Heat Signature will not be receiving regular updates, with all post-launch content being 'once-offs.'

I remember seeing the Beta of this Heat Signature and was really interested to see what it was like, once it was complete. Now that it’s out of Beta, I’ve gotten my hands on a copy of the game. So we ask the age-old question, was it worth the wait and more importantly is it worth the money?

Specifications

  • Minimum OS: Windows 7

Design

The game was designed and developed by Tom Francis, and if you do not recognise the name, then you have probably not played his previous game, Gunpoint. As a side note if you have not played Gunpoint then you really should, it’s really good and worth every penny in my opinion. Anyway… I digress.

The game has a top-down 2D-sprite look, which reminds me of the original GTA. It has a beautiful style with bright neon colours that I certainly find very appealing. The game does have some links with the current Rogue-like boom – Ships that you encounter are randomly generated, with a set of guards on board that match the difficulty of the mission. Weapon design has a lot of input on how you achieve your goals; I love that you are given a choice of going in all-guns-blazing, or trying a stealth route, or anywhere in-between. There are a ton of different weapons available in the game, and you can pick up any weapon that is dropped by an enemy, which you can sell back to a friendly station. There was obviously a design decision to make most of the common weapons have a sell value of zero and it’s one I respect. It encourages you to take more missions, or to go out into the world and capture a ship to gain some extra cash.

Gameplay

At the beginning of the game, you get to choose your character. Each character has a randomised backstory that you work towards, by taking missions and a randomised base set of equipment. You control your character with a mixture of mouse and keyboard inputs, and there is nothing really new here but the controls work so well that they become second nature really quickly. When flying your pod, the view automatically zooms out and it’s only then that you get an idea of the size of the game you are about to unravel. Zooming can be controlled via the mouse wheel, which comes in really handy when you board a ship because it will help you plan. This is where the game has a similarity with two other games that I have really enjoyed, Hot Line Miami and FTL.

Heat Signature - 100% Achievement Guide (How to Unlock All)

If you have a blunt weapon like a wrench then you can use it to knock guards unconscious, you also have the ability to slow down time and this can be really useful to get you out of incredibly sticky situations.

If it all goes horribly wrong then you will be killed, or knocked unconscious. An unconscious body is thrown out into space and then you are given some time to remote control your pod to pick you up and get you back to a friendly station or just head back to the ship you were thrown out of, to seek revenge. It’s moments like this, or moments where you accidentally set off an explosive in the middle of the ship and are then thrown out into space that makes the game feel tense. There is a certain flow of the game and I hate to use such hype-based words, but it’s pretty close to flawless. It’s sheer joy when it all just works and your plan goes smoothly, you execute a perfect move of killing or knocking out a certain group of guards to get to your goal.

Release Date

Prepare yourself for this one, sit down and take a deep breath. If you’re not familiar with my buying habits then check out my other game reviews and you’ll get the impression that I rarely pay full price for games. I’m a bargain hunter and really like getting my money worth. So you may be quite shocked to hear that I paid full price for Heat Signature. I even bought it via Humble Bundle so that the developer gets a better deal. I’m also going to say that it’s been worth every penny so far and I’m sure that I have many hours of gameplay ahead of me.

Heat Signature Gameplay

I’d really like to be able to pick holes in Heat Signature; I’m sure that some people will find it’s gameplay repetitive and boring but I personally don’t. Graphically it’s not breaking any new ground but it is beautiful to look at and runs super smooth even on a not very powerful Laptop. If I was being overly critical I would say that I would have expected the game to have a Mac and Linux version from day one. Tom has yet to confirm if there is going to be one or but I am hoping. He has spent the last three and a half years on the project so if he wants to take a break and enjoy people enjoying his game then I’m fine with that, he has earned it.
