Are you looking for an answer to the age-old question can I install a digital version of a PlayStation video game after I already bought and installed the disc version? The answer is yes you can – for a price. Switching from a disc game to digital copy on the PlayStation is pretty easy but sadly it’s not just a simple click to upgrade. The bad news is to convert your disc game to a digital game you will need to re-buy the game as a digital version. Sorry! The disc content you installed is not the same content as the download, and you will need to delete the physical game to install the digital-only version.
The good news – your saved games
If your game is in ISO format, use a virtual disk utility to mount the ISO. Whatever utility you use, we want to extract the contents into and empty folder. Take note of where you saved the contents. Just a warning each game publisher and each game is different – but your old save game file should work with the new digital version once it is installed. Be certain not to delete your save game files when you trash your game app. Your progress / save file stored in the cloud should also be safe, changing versions will not delete your files. If you have questions about the PlayStation Plus Online Storagethis article explains how to use this feature.
A digital game will let you game on multiple screens with only one copy of the game.
Steps to convert a disc game to a digital game
To make the change from physical disc game to digital-first, delete your disc installed game from your library. The PlayStation Store will not let you download the digital version until the disc install is removed from your HD. Plus you will probably want that valuable HD space back anyhow. Next, remove the disc, and head to the PlayStation store. Pony up more cash and repurchase the game in digital form – hopefully, it is on a Flash sale. Sorry there is no cheap way to do this, but you can sell the disc to a friend, or GameStop.
One important thing to note – if you have a digital version installed on your console, you won’t be able to use your previous disc-based video game anymore. This is rarely an issue, but if the PSN (or your network) goes down and your PlayStation can’t authenticate you might not be able to play your game offline. Again your mileage may vary based on the game. Setting your console to be the Primary may allow you to play offline.

Sony’s PlayStation 4 can run many of its next-gen games in full 1080p high-definition and at 60 frames per second, but to achieve that, it installs every game to its hard drive.
In an extensive PlayStation Blog update today, Sony revealed a ton of information about its upcoming system, which debuts Nov. 15 for $400. The company revealed its launch-day lineup and confirmed that the console won’t support external hard drives. Now we are learning that the system will need to install every game it plays to its hard drive — that includes disc-based Blu-ray titles.
“All PS4 Blu-ray disc games must be cached to the hard drive to ensure a smooth gaming experience,” reads Sony’s PS4 blog. “However, certain titles may not require you to wait for the game data to be fully cached before starting gameplay. In order to start playing disc-based games, users will need to insert the game disc into PS4 just like on the [PlayStation 3] system.”
We’ve reached out to Sony to see if it knows which games will support play even while they’re installing. We’ll update with any new information.
